Baby Namings and Blessings

“A baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on.”

What greater cause for joy than when a tiny new soul arrives to join us on planet Earth. For our ancestors being recognized as one of the tribe’s own no not only meant love but protection – and therefore, life itself!

A baby blessing is a very special way of celebrating your child and formally introducing him or her into a wider community. If desired, those who will have a special role in the little one’s life can come forward and make their vows in the presence of the gathering. It is also a beautiful way to welcome and celebrate an adoptive child into the family.

There are two types of baby blessing ceremonies. One is called a christening or baptism, and the other is called a naming ceremony. Both a christening and a baptism are religious, while the naming ceremony is not. Or I can design a ceremony that combines both.

“We’ll be friends forever, won’t we, Pooh?" asked Piglet.
“Longer than that.” answered Pooh.

Your baby’s blessing ceremony can be a big occasion with extended family, friends and community. Or it can be an intimate moment, with just parents and child. Whatever the choice, it’s a time to focus on honoring your child’s life, and promising to do your best to help your child be their best.

You can include readings, music or rituals like tree planting or hand and foot printing. After the ceremony, everyone can hang out and get to know the newest member of your family. A very popular baby naming ceremony is deeply rooted in the ancient symbolism of the four elements – earth, air, fire and water. Earth represents family and home. Air represents higher learning and wisdom. Fire represents creativity and passion. And water is the home of emotion and experience.

Again, baby blessings are one of my very favorite ceremonies. It would be a joy to do yours. As with all of my ceremonies, you get to approve every word. Contact me today if you’d like to know more.

“Due to a sudden rainshower in the morning, the baby blessing for our little Katrina had to be moved from a wonderful seaside spot to indoors. Peggy was most flexible and accommodating and she made it all look easy. Everyone absolutely loved the moon water ritual and Katrina giggled throughout. For the tree planting ritual, we mixed soils from the grandparents yards - - everyone got teary. And we treasure the beautiful copy of the ceremony script that Peggy sent to us afterward.”
